HERBERT E. SPENCE

EUREKA -- Herbert Earl Spence, 71, died Saturday at his residence.

Earl was born June 7, 1932, in Johnston County and was the son of the late L. M and Elsie Jones Spence. He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Senior Master SGT, Com-munications Specialist, for 22 years. After his retirement, he owned Klean Rite Carpet Care and also worked for Piggly Wiggly in Goldsboro and Pikeville as a produce manager. He was preceded in death by his brother, Tom Spence.

A gathering to celebrate his life will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Shackleford Chapel with the Rev. Robert Fletcher officiating. Burial will follow at the Eureka Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and other times at the home of his son.

Mr. Spence is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara Spence, of the home; son, Ed Spence and wife, Vicky, of Eureka; grandchildren, Matt and Will Spence both of Eureka; sisters, Shirley Spence and Ruby and her husband, H.L. Joyner, all of Clayton; brothers, Glen Spence of Fayetteville, Harry Spence and his wife, Shelby, of Garner and Dixon Spence and his wife, Joyce, of Clayton.

Arrangements are by Shackleford Funerals and Cremations.
