EVELYN R. EDWARDS

PRINCETON -- Evelyn Rains Edwards, 75, of 1015 Edwards Road, Princeton, died Friday evening at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Smithfield.

Born Nov. 17, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Walter Bruce and Odessa Godwin Rains and was preceded in death by a brother, Bruce (Bowser) Rains. Mrs. Edwards was the wife for 54 years to Melvin R. Edwards of Princeton and together they owned and operated the Edwards IGA for years. She was a member of the Princeton United Methodist Church and a past member of the United Methodist Women's Society.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 7 p.m. at the Princeton United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Reggie Ponder and the Rev. John Roberts officiating.

In addition to her husband she is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis A. Edwards of the home, Rosemary E. and Doug Gatewood of Smithfield, and Sara E. and Steve Moore of Goldsboro; three sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Rene Edwards of Smithfield, Steve and Lunelle Edwards of Princeton and Phil and Marian Edwards of Smithfield; four sisters, Jean Denning of Four Oaks, Kathryn McCabe of Sumpter, S.C., Joyce Knight of Princeton and Judy Pate of Grifton; three brothers, Duran Rains of Morehead City, James M. Rains of Monroe and Boyce Rains of Princeton; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will begin receiving friends at 6 p.m. and immediately following the Memorial service.

Although flowers are welcome, the family has requested that contributions can be made to the Princeton United Methodist Church Building Fund or the Johnston Memorial Hospital Foundation.

The family is being served by Casey Funeral Home in Princeton.
