Seminar geared toward helping high schoolers gain entry to the college

The N.C. Eastern Alumni Chapter, based in Goldsboro, of Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte is hosting a free seminar for high school students prepare for college.
"Getting Into College" is open to students in grades 9-12, says Patricia Ford, one of the organizers.
"This is the first time that the JCSU Alumni has had this seminar in Goldsboro," she said.
"It will be classroom-style presentations, with students able to ask questions."
The event will be held Saturday, March 24, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Faith Presbyterian Church, 2114 N. Berkeley Blvd.
"This is a much-needed seminar for our high school students," said Cheryl McCullough, local alumni chapter president.
"We are finding that many of our students are not prepared to take the American College Test (ACT).
"Additionally, many students are intimidated by the college application process. The seminar will address both."
Presenters on hand for the working seminar include Marchelle Horner, account executive with ACT; Maxine Cooper and Renita Allen Dawson, representing the Wayne Community College continuing education department; and Jackie Murphy, financial assistance at Johnston Community College.
Among the topics covered will be test preparation, financial assistance, qualifying for college and the ACT.
Ms. Horner will also share strategies for being successful on the ACT assessment.
While the Goldsboro chapter is hosting the seminar, it is open to high school students in surrounding counties.

The N.C. Eastern Alumni Chapter meets monthly, on the second Sunday at 2 p.m. at Faith Presbyterian Church. New members are welcome, Ford said.
