Wayne County has had two flu deaths, officials said, as they announced "Free Flu Friday" at the Health Department for anyone who has not had the vaccine.

Josa Raynor-Vaughn, communicable diseases program manager, reported both at the Board of Health meeting Wednesday.

"We have received over 600 reports of positive flu tests here in Wayne County and as of (Tuesday) we had two flu-related deaths here in Wayne County, as compared to the state of North Carolina, which has had 140," she said.

While privacy laws prohibit providing more specific details about those who succumbed, Raynor-Vaughn said both residents had other health issues, further complicated by the flu.

The Health Department still has flu vaccines available, prompting officials to host "Free Flu Friday" on Feb. 16, from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at the clinic inside the county office building at the corner of Ash and Herman streets.

"We have over 200 vaccines remaining and because of a donation, will be able to offer the vaccine free of charge," she said.

Board member Bob Cagle pointed out that the Health Department is able to accept donations for such a cause, allowing them to make them available at no charge to the public.

Cagle also said he had been contacted by a community member, expressing concern about how rampantly the flu is spreading throughout the state and nation.

"We've been fortunate, even though we've had two deaths related (to flu)," he said. "It's not been as bad as it is in some other places."

He then said he spoke with Wayne County Health Director Davin Madden about the no-cost vaccinations.

"I got in touch with Mr. Madden and checked and got approval to do this and to accept donations to make it possible."

Wanda Westbrook, nursing director, said the supply is limited to vaccinations the Health Department currently has on hand.

"I don't think we will be able to get any more flu vaccine for this year, not until next flu season, July or August," she said.
