It's that time of year once again to whip up your best batch of gingerbread dough and get your favorite candies and frostings ready to create a gingerbread house.
Entries for the Arts Council of Wayne County's annual Gingerbread House Competition are due by 7 p.m. Nov. 17.
They will be judged Nov. 20 on strength of the structure, degree of creativity, innovate use of products, traditional versus whimsical and overall appeal.
"We are encouraging people to think outside the gingerbread box," said Arts Council director Wendy Walker. "A traditional gingerbread house can be beautiful, but we are encouraging people to consider making a gingerbread firehouse or a gingerbread hospital.
"Think about the buildings you enter each day. What establishments are important to you? Then make that out of gingerbread. We are excited to see the creativity that is expressed by this year's participants."
Entries can be for sale. That's left up to the creator, Walker said.
Categories include ages 5 through 10 and ages 18 and older. The entry fee is $10 per house.
The gingerbread creations will be on display at the Arts Council through Dec. 20.
"The Arts Council of Wayne County is pleased to present this annual event because it is a throwback to traditional Christmas celebrations of days gone by," Walker said. "The smell of fresh gingerbread, grandparents teaching grandchildren the family baking secrets and the joy of adding just the right decoration to provide the finishing touch -- it is all part of the fun and fellowship of the holidays.
"I was so thrilled to see the incredible detail on the entries last year; they were all so beautiful. I am looking forward to another deliciously creative display this year as well."
