Two men broke into a garage on the 200 block of Patetown Road Monday, culminating in a shooting which sent a man to Vidant Medical Center, according to a Goldsboro Police Department incident report.

According to the report, the owner of the garage called police just after midnight on Tuesday. She told the responding officer that she was in her house when she heard gunshots being fired in her backyard, near her detached garage. Two neighbors then ran up to the house, telling her to call the police.

According to the report, one of those neighbors told the homeowner that two unidentified black men had forced their way into the garage, then brandished a gun at them and asked "Where is it at?"

The neighbor said she hid behind some tires as soon as the gun came out and then heard gunshots.

Around an hour later, officers received word that John Oscar Mumford had been driven by private vehicle to Wayne UNC Health Care, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Goldsboro Police Department Major Anthony Carmon said that Mumford was inside the garage during the break in, and was shot several times. Carmon did not know why Mumford was in the garage or how long he had been there, but he said that the homeowner was aware of Mumford's presence there.

Mumford was later moved to Vidant Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Carmon did not know what the unidentified men were looking for. No one else was injured in the incident, he said.
