A detention officer with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office resigned today after being charged with driving while impaired early Sunday morning, according to law enforcement.

Jacob Aaron Warren, 23, of Faison, is charged with driving while impaired and driving left of center.

Sgt. J.K. Whitley with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said a trooper pulled Warren over on Beston Road after Warren allegedly crossed into the trooper's lane as they were driving toward each other at about 2:19 a.m. Sunday.

The trooper turned around and pulled Warren for crossing into his lane.

Whitley said Warren had red, glassy eyes and a strong odor of alcohol on his breath when he was pulled over.

Warren reportedly told the trooper he was coming from the "Fall Ball" in LaGrange. Whitley was unable to provide details on what the "Fall Ball" is.

Whitley said Warren told the trooper he worked for the Wayne County Sheriff's Office before the trooper conducted several roadside tests for impairment.

Whitley said Warren's blood alcohol level was .10 when he was tested for impairment on an intoximeter at the Wayne County Jail.

Warren was charged and signed a written promise to appear in court on Jan. 5, 2018.

Wayne County Sheriff Larry Pierce said Warren was still within his one-year probationary period with the law enforcement agency when he was charged Sunday morning and resigned today.
