As the solar eclipse draws near, organizations in the city are gearing up for special eclipse-centered events.

The Wayne County Public Library will host an eclipse viewing and educational event from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. today, where kids and their parents will learn about what an eclipse is and have the chance to view it with eclipse glasses.

Lil Keener, children's assistant at the library, said the event is full, with around 70 kids and their parents signed up. The library is also working on live streaming the eclipse on their TV screen.

At Wayne Community College, faculty and staff will come together for the annual Campus Fund Drive, this year with a special eclipse-themed twist.

Emily Byrd, donor relations and communications coordinator for the foundation, said that the theme this year is "Totality -- Path to 100 Percent Giving," and that the foundation hopes to have 100 percent of faculty and staff donate in some way.

The fund drive will feature "solar snacks" such as sun chips, moon pies and milky way bars, and attendees will be able to watch the eclipse with NASA-approved glasses. There are only 75 pairs, Byrd said, so attendees will need to share them and make sure to give them back.

The event is focused on faculty and staff, she said, with the community fund drive to come later in the month. Byrd said events in prior years have drawn around 150 people, and she expects more this year because of the eclipse.

For people not going to an organized eclipse viewing event, the forecast shows a partly cloudy sky between the hours of 1 and 4 p.m., which will be the hours of the solar eclipse.

The peak time in Goldsboro is 2:46 p.m. with nearly 93 percent coverage of the sun.
