The Wayne County Solid Waste Department will hold its annual household hazardous waste event on Saturday, June 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Wayne County citizens can bring waste that would otherwise be dangerous to dispose of to the Wayne County landfill at 460 S. Landfill Road in Dudley. Recycling Coordinator Jeff Sparrow said that the event is a good way to keep chemicals like household cleaners from damaging the environment.
"It keeps people from dumping them down the drain," he said.
There are limitations on what kinds of waste is acceptable. Only private citizens can attend, so no commercial waste is allowed. Explosives, fireworks and flares are also prohibited, as well as medical or radioactive waste.
Smoke detectors, gas cylinders and trash are not allowed.
Sparrow said the event is the only reliable way to make sure dangerous chemicals are properly disposed of. The department holds the event every year. The event is co-sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the state Cooperative Extension Service.
