Wayne County Public Schools announced Wednesday afternoon the cancellation of all after school events Friday and all events scheduled for Saturday in advance of a looming storm likely to bring snow to the area.

So far no school closures or early dismissals have been announced.

The National Weather Service in Raleigh is calling for 1 inch to 2 inches of snow to fall between Friday evening and Saturday, but cautions that it is too early to say for sure just how much snowfall to expect in specific locations.

A WCPS news release went out Wednesday at about 4:30 p.m. stating that all Friday athletic programs, 4-H events, diver's education, remediation, PTA meetings, awards ceremonies, plays, parent seminars and facility rentals are canceled.

Saturday athletic events and practices are also canceled, as well as the science fair, all of which are rescheduled.

Spokesperson Ken Derksen said in the release that WCPS is closely monitoring the weather and staying in close communication with emergency management officials. Parents, students and teachers are encouraged to closely monitor the school system's website and follow its Facebook and Twitter platforms @WayneCountyPS for updates.

This is an ongoing weather event. Continue to check back here for updates.
