Two Wayne County students have been named among the 3,000 winners of National Merit scholarships financed by the nation's colleges and universities.
Thomas Donica of Goldsboro, co-salutatorian at Wayne Christian School, plans to attend Liberty University and study chemical engineering.
Ian Stewart of Pikeville, a home-school student, plans to attend the University of Kentucky and pursue studies in applied science.
Recipients were chosen from among winners in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship program, who plan to attend their respective institutions.
The awards, announced this week, provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study.
College-sponsored merit scholarship winners are part of a prestigious group of about 7,500 high school seinors who will receive the scholarships, worth an estimated $33 million.
More than 1.5 million juniors from 22,000 high schools around the country entered the 2016 National Merit Scholarship competition when they took the 2014 Preliminary ST/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
