Five graduating seniors from Wayne County Public Schools have been chosen to receive Emmet and Mary Robinson Trust Fund scholarships.

The trust fund was set up by the Robinsons to award students in the school system with scholarship money, based in part on financial need and specific areas of study. Recipients must intend to continue their education in the fields of medicine, nursing, agriculture or the ministry of the Presbyterian or Episcopal churches.

*From Charles B. Aycock High School -- Alexus Whitfield and Crystal Woodard, $4,000 each for their pursuits in nursing.

Miss Whitfield will be attending East Carolina University, while Miss Woodard will attend Barton College.

*From Eastern Wayne High School, Carlie Powell was awarded $3,000 toward her studies in nursing at ECU.

*From Southern Wayne High School, there are two recipients.

Cierra Thompson received a $3,500 scholarship toward her nursing studies at Winston-Salem State University.

Carter Jones received a $1,000 award. He plans to study agriculture business at N.C. State University.

The scholarships are renewable each year based on academic standing and maintenance of the declared major.

This fall, approximately $35,000 in new and renewable aid will be distributed through the trust fund.

In addition to the latest awards, officials said 11 past recipients will be receiving assistance in their programs of study at Campbell University, ECU, Johnston Community College, UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Pembroke, UNC-Wilmington and Wayne Community College.

"As both a member of this scholarship's selection committee and the school district's Career and Technical Education program (CTE), I am very excited to see students who have taken CTE courses in high school receive financial support to actively pursue higher education and careers in those same areas," said Beverly Boltinhouse, WCPS associate director of CTE.

"Our school district is very appreciative of this annual scholarship that has been made available to support our graduating seniors in their academic and professional aspirations."
