Charlston Terrell

Charlston Terrell received the 2016 North Carolina Governor's Award for outstanding volunteer and community service.

A volunteer receptionist at Belfast Head Start Center and several other areas, he was also named WAGES 2015-2016 Parent of the Year, officials said.

He became a parent volunteer with WAGES, Wayne Action Group for Economy Solvency, when his son entered the WAGES Early Head Start program.

His compassion for the children and parents, and his dedication to willingly serve them and the community, is impressive, said Tiffany Lucky, family engagement coordinator with WAGES Head Start/Early Head Start.

"Charlston recruits fathers at WAGES and throughout the community to join WAGES Male Involvement Program, which consists of fathers meeting to discuss personal and professional topics, while obtaining information presented by a trainer," she said. "Charlston is the assigned leader for the Male Involvement meetings and works diligently assisting the Male Involvement coordinator with the coordination of the meetings."

He also serves as co-chair of the Head Start policy council and regular attends meetings and conferences for parent committees and trainings, she said.
