Goldsboro Fire Chief Gary Whaley holds Hannah at the scene of a collision that happened Thursday at the intersection of Spence Avenue and Royall Avenue. Hannah was rescued from a Jeep that rolled over on its side and was later transported to Berkeley Veterinary Clinic where she was examined.
A medical emergency suffered by an elderly woman while driving led to a four-car accident on Royall Avenue just past North Spence Avenue Thursday afternoon.
One vehicle rolled over on its side after striking three other cars, trapping the driver who suffered the emergency.
The accident took place at 1:39 p.m., according to a Goldsboro police report.
Diane Clem, 79, of Goldsboro, had to be cut out of her vehicle by the Goldsboro Fire Department.
She was later transported to Wayne Memorial Hospital by Wayne County EMS.
Firefighters also rescued a small dog that had become trapped inside the vehicle with Mrs. Clem.
"Hannah is the dog's name. She was taken to Berkeley Veterinary Clinic," Assistant Fire Chief James Farfour said.
Farfour said emergency room staff at Wayne Memorial Hospital had been notified of Hannah's whereabouts so the family there caring for Mrs. Clem could be informed.
"We have worked with Berkeley Vet in the past and have been successful reuniting families with pets we have rescued," he said.
According to the GPD wreck report, Mrs. Clem will be charged with failure to wear her seatbelt and failure to maintain lane control.
Wayne Memorial Hospital spokesperson Georgia Dees said Mrs. Clem was released from the hospital later Thursday afternoon.
