An eighth-grade student at Brogden Middle School was one of six students in the state chosen to attend a summer enrichment program at a North Carolina college or university.
Jonathan Vasquez will receive a $1,000 Middle School Summer Enrichment Scholarship from the N.C. Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, or NCASFAA.
The NCASFAA awards the scholarship to encourage economically disadvantaged middle school students to begin considering attending college after completing high school. Recipients are matched with a mentor to assist them in selecting a program and requesting funds from the NCASFAA.
Jonathan has already been contemplating his future and said he was very excited when his school counselor, Bernitia Kea, gave him the news about the summer program.
"I felt really proud of myself," he said. "I want to be an engineer one day and I plan to be the first one from my family to go to on college. I look forward to this opportunity."
Scholarship recipients represent the eastern, western and middle regions of the state, with two chosen from each region.
"We are all so excited for Jonathan and this fantastic accomplishment," Ms. Kea said. "Jonathan is focused on his education and aims to become an influential young leader.
"He is also enthusiastic about his goals and is quite passionate when talking about his desire to become an engineer. I believe this award will encourage him to continue working hard to realize his dreams and be the catalyst to propel him towards a successful college education and career."
