Special Olympics athletes Alan Jenkins, Erica Walderman and Ryan Hood carry the torch at the start of Thursday morning's Special Olympics Torch Run designed to bring attention to the athletes. The Wayne County part of the run is sponsored by the Goldsboro Police Department. It started at 8 a.m. at the Mount Olive Police Station and ended 15 miles later at the Goldsboro Police Station. Along with the athletes, officers from the Goldsboro and Mount Olive police departments, Basic Law Enforcement Training cadets and a contingent from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base participated. The torch was in New Hanover and Duplin counties prior to Wayne County and next goes to the Greenville Police Department.
