Two weeks after a Goldsboro man was shot to death as he got up to answer a knock at the door at 1000 Devereaux St., no arrests have been made.

Investigators are following up on leads, Goldsboro Police Chief Jeff Stewart said.

Alton Leevon Fields Jr., 35, was shot before 1 a.m. Oct. 15 by an unknown subject who came knocking at the home of Jasper Godwin, 24. Godwin, Fields and Starlit Frazier, 26, were in the home when the shooting started. Fields was the only one struck and later died at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

"Our investigators have been going at it hard trying to determine exactly why this happened." Stewart said.

A lack of willingness to come forward on behalf of potential witnesses has been an obstacle, he said.

In addition to the Fields murder, at least eight reports of shots fired have been investigated this month alone, Stewart said.

Uniformed patrol officers, as well as officers from the Selective Enforcement and Housing Units, have stepped up patrols in the areas where those shootings occurred, he said.

Still, the Police Department needs witnesses to come forward.

"It's a combined effort. People in the community, if they see a crime, need to step forward and cooperate with the police," Stewart said.
