Man, 52, killed in accident in Goldsboro

A Goldsboro man was struck and killed by a vehicle while walking on West Ash Street near Georgia Avenue early Tuesday.
Michael Ray McClary, 52, 6060 W. Mulberry St., was hit just after 8 a.m. by an eastbound vehicle. He later died at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
The driver of the vehicle has not been charged, but the investigation is ongoing, Goldsboro Police Department officials said.
The driver, Christina Nichole Lancaster, 26, of 603 E. Walnut St., told investigators that she had difficulty seeing due to the rising sun in her eyes, said Maj. Mike West, head of the Police Department's Patrol Division.
"The person behind the driver backed up her story," West said.
Witnesses said Ms. Lancaster did not stop right away after hitting McClary.
"She said she did not immediately know that what she struck had been a person, and that she did not want to stop her vehicle on the railroad tracks," West said, adding that the vehicle traveled about 100 yards after the accident.
A member of the victim's family, Vanessa McClary of San Antonio, Texas, said via telephone today that witnesses told her family that the driver of the car appeared to speed up as she approached the victim.
West said that would be something the investigators will look at. Tapes from video surveillance cameras at a nearby convenience store might show the how the accident happened, he said.
"We'll see if we can spot the vehicle between two points and if it looks like they were traveling at or below the speed limit, I don't think any charges will be filed," he said.
As for the witnesses who claimed Ms. Lancaster's car appeared to speed up as she approached McClary, West said none of them told police at the scene that that was what happened, but he said investigators will go back and look at the claim to see if it has any merit.
"If we don't find anything new than what we already know, I doubt she'll be charged," he said.
