A knife-wielding suspect is in Wayne County Jail under a $400,000 secured bond on armed robbery and kidnapping charges after sticking up the clerk at her former place of employment.

Regina Speight, 37, of 122 Heather Ann Lane, was arrested at her home Friday after she allegedly robbed the Down East Travel Center at 2600 U.S. 117 S.

According to the report filed with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, Ms. Speight walked into the truck stop and Greyhound transfer station just after 2:15 p.m. and held the cashier up a knife point.

She then put the clerk, Chastity Lynn Schoolcraft, in a closet and fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash that has yet to be recovered.

Deputies, with the help of store management, identified Ms. Speight as a former employee from the surveillance footage retrieved from the store's security cameras.

Manager Jini Winstead said she had no idea why her former employee would commit such a brazen act.

"I wish I knew. She left here and then tried to get her job back several times but we didn't hire her back," Ms. Winstead said.

Ms. Speight had not been employed at Down East for more than two years.
