Grads will turn tassels

Valedictorians and salutatorians for area private schools have been announced. High school graduation season kicks off this weekend, as the first round of ceremonies for private and the two newest public high schools are held.
Faith Christian Academy will hold its event Friday night at 7 p.m. at the school. Pastor Dann Patrick will deliver the commencement address.
The school has 16 students receiving diplomas this year.
Abigail Lynn Pierce is valedictorian. She plans to attend Gardner-Webb University and to study nursing.
Kayla Lee Johnson, salutatorian, aspires to be a physical therapy assistant and will attend Fayetteville Technical Community College in the fall.
Wayne Country Day School has 28 graduates this year. Ceremonies will take place at the school Thursday evening, May 23, at 6 p.m. Carolina Brass will provide music and Leigh Tanner, science department chairman, was chosen by students to give the faculty address.
Elizabeth Schappell is valedictorian. She will be going to N.C. State University and majoring in biology.
The salutatorian, Lisa Peacock, is also going to N.C. State and plans to study industrial engineering.
Wayne Early/Middle College High School will also hold its ceremony Thursday night, May 23, at 6 p.m. It will take place at The Bridge on Whitley Church Road. Officials said there will be 70 graduation candidates this year, including current seniors and fifth-year students. The school does not select a valedictorian or salutatorian.
Wayne School of Engineering, the newest Wayne County Public Schools' high school, also does not feature a valedictorian or salutatorian. Seventy students, including current seniors, fifth-year students and one junior graduating this year, will be awarded diplomas on Friday evening, May 24, at 6 p.m. in the Goldsboro High School auditorium.
Wayne Christian School graduation will take place Saturday morning, May 25, at 10 a.m. at the school.
Officials there said this year marks a first at the school, with the top four students sharing the roles of valedictorian and salutatorian.
Amy Clarke and Molly Glover are co-valedictorians.
Ms. Clarke plans to study nursing at Liberty University, and Ms. Glover said she intends to study pre-med at Campbell University.
Marianna Gray and Brittney Kornegay are co-salutatorians. Ms. Gray is undecided about where she will pursue her studies, but plans to major in biochemistry and pursue pharmacy school. Ms. Kornegay said she will study biology at East Carolina University.
