After decades of renting movies in Goldsboro, Blockbuster's Spence Avenue branch has reached the point of no return.

The store announced Tuesday that it will be closing and liquidating its inventory over the next two months.

The store's closing comes as Blockbuster's parent company, Dish Network Corp., has reduced the company's brick and mortar establishments across the country as it moves toward Blockbuster Express kiosks and Total Access, its discs-by-mail program. Dish Network purchased Blockbuster after it filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy in September 2010.

Scott Hollis, the Goldsboro assistant store manager, said he and his employees were notified about two weeks before the store put up its store closing signs Tuesday. Staff members had been notifying customers of the upcoming closure leading up to Jan. 28, when the store stopped issuing rentals.

Now, after a Sunday of marking inventory for sale, the store is in liquidation mode, selling off its rentals, merchandise and snacks. The store's newest releases have been shipped to nearby stores.

Movies, video games and candy are all at least 10 percent off this week, he said, while each additional week leading up to the store's final day will see increased discounts. Blockbuster's official last day is April 15.

Hollis explained that store employees will also be giving out promotional codes to customers for two months of subscription to Total Access as a parting gesture to customers who will no longer have a retail store to visit.
