Wayne County residents are reminded that Boy Scouts and Cub Scout across the Tuscarora Council will be out Saturday morning, hanging plastic bags on doorknobs in hope of collecting non-perishable food items for the Salvation Army.

Following the holidays, many food pantries and kitchens that help the needy find themselves short of goods. The Tuscarora Council has decided to join councils across the nation in collecting food to restock their shelves.

Jeremiah Daniels, vice president of activities and community service for the council, is in charge of the drive, and he urged residents to lend a hand. People are in need year-round, he pointed out, not just at the holidays.

Scouts will return to the neighborhoods the following Saturday, Feb. 11, to collect the bags.

A tractor-trailer also will parked at Berkeley Mall to serve as a collection point. Daniels urged people who did not receive a bag at their home to bring canned goods and other non-perishable items to the mall to contribute.

The goal is to collect 25 tons of food.
