FREMONT -- Fremont police arrested a man accused of shooting a father and son in the front yard of his home Wednesday night.

Kentrell Alston, 23, who is believed to have left the scene of the shooting at 302 S. Goldsboro St. before law enforcement arrived, turned himself in to Fremont police Thursday afternoon.

Alston was placed in the Wayne County Jail under a $102,000 bond.

He was charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

Matthew Brantley, 23, of South Street and his father, Theodore Bass, 48, of Wayne Street, were both taken to Pitt Memorial Hospital for gunshot wounds, Fremont police Chief Paul Moats said.

Moats said Matthew Brantley was shot twice and Theodore Brantley was shot once outside of the South Goldsboro Street home around 8:30 p.m. Both men were struck in their lower extremities, Moats said.

From the shells found at the scene, it appears an SKS rifle was used in the shooting, Moats said.

Police have received complaints in recent months of drug activity and prostitution taking place at the residence where the shooting occurred, Moats said.

Moats said an altercation led up to the shooting at the home after the Brantleys arrived.

The investigation is ongoing and there might be additional arrests, Moats said.

He added that he was appreciative of the help provided by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Pikeville police and the Fremont Fire Department also responded to the scene.
