NCDOT examines closing crossings

A study by the N.C. Department of Transportation is expected to recommend the possible closure of Mulberry, Virginia, Bryant, Bain and Lionel streets where they cross the railroad tracks.
An informational workshop will be held Sept. 22 on the traffic separation study, or analysis, for closures of several Goldsboro streets where they cross the railroad tracks.
The meeting will begin at 5 p.m. and end at 7 in the cafeteria of Wayne Early Middle College High School, 801 N. Lionel St.
Citizens are invited to drop in and speak individually with DOT officials about the study and the proposed closings. No formal presentation will be given.
DOT proposes to close the existing Norfolk Southern Railroad at-grade highway-railroad crossing at West Birkhead Street. The Lanier Avenue railroad crossing provides alternate access.
The DOT Rail Division is performing the traffic separation study, which includes the railroad crossings at Mulberry, Ash, Virginia, George, Holly, William, Bryant, Bain, Lionel, Audubon and Jefferson streets and Herman Street-Wayne Memorial Drive.
The study will recommend proposed crossing closures, the upgrade of safety equipment and other railroad crossing improvements.
The proposed closures are a part of an effort to reduce the number of redundant and/or high-accident rail-highway at-grade crossings statewide.
