PIKEVILLE -- Start slow and finish strong.

Charles B. Aycock's varsity soccer team embodied that mantra Wednesday evening, overcoming a sluggish start to file its first win of the season, 5-0 over county rival Goldsboro at Hardy-Talton stadium

Goldsboro (0-2-0 overall) opened with a tough 17 minutes of soccer, trying to rebound from a bad loss Monday night.

The Golden Falcons routinely denied Goldsboro access to legitimate scoring opportunities, beating the Cougars to 50-50 balls, denying efforts played over the top and access to the penalty area.

"We played the game that we wanted to play," CBA head coach Cory Worrell said. "We were a little slow at the beginning. We just had to get our feet under us.

CBA (1-0-1) consistently had shots on goal and controlled the ball all night rarely letting Goldsboro get past midfield. The Golden Falcons took advantage of every mistake.

The first miscue took place in the 17th minute.

Aycock senior Coe Jordan knocked in a goal when the Goldsboro keeper failed to recover a corner kick, which gave CBA a 1-0 lead.

Then in the 19th, senior Dillon Borel stole the ball from the Goldsboro keeper and kicked the ball into the open net for a 2-0 Aycock lead.

CBA led 2-0 at halftime.

In the 45th, Aycock increased its lead to 3-0 after a failed clear by the Goldsboro keeper that created a scramble for the ball. Sophomore Zach Naughton recovered the ball and smacked it into the net.

The Falcons scored again when senior Josh Naughton powered home a header off of a corner kick.

Aycock scored its fifth and final goal in the 54th. Zach Naughton on the left side of the field, and slightly outside the box, sent the ball flying into the net.

"It's definitely good for the program when a sophomore is on top of the stat sheet," Worrell said. "Makes us excited for the rest of the season."

Despite the lopsided score first-year Goldsboro head coach Bryan Hancock was pleased with his team's effort.

"Hat's off to Aycock, they played a good game," Hancock said. "Our guys are improving every game and I'm real proud of them."

Aycock faces Havelock in the Battle At The Beach on Friday.
