CHAPEL HILL -- Just 11 points separate five teams in the Carolina 1-A Conference Wells Fargo Conference cup competition after the conclusion of the fall sports season.

Hobbton is the leader with 31 points. The Wildcats claimed the men's and women's cross country championships, and men's soccer crown -- the first in program history. They lead defending Cup holder Rosewood by 6.5 points. The Eagles ended up third in women's volleyball and men's cross country.

North Duplin, the league's tri-champ in football, is third with 22.5 points. Lakewood, which shared the league football crown with North Duplin and Princeton, and took first in women's volleyball, has 22 points. Princeton (21 points), Spring Creek (20), James Kenan (12) and Neuse Charter (9) round out the seven-team standings.

Goldsboro is ranked fourth in the Eastern Carolina 2-A Conference Cup standings with 222.5 points. The Cougars claimed a share of the men's soccer regular-season title, which is believed to be the first in school history.

Greene Central leads with 245 points, followed by North Lenoir with 237.5. ECC football champ Ayden-Grifton is third with 230 points. South Lenoir (215) is ranked fifth and Kinston is sixth with 125 points.

Charles B. Aycock capped the fall sports season with a fourth-place finish in the split-classification Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference. County rivals Eastern Wayne (17 points) and Southern Wayne (13) are sixth and seventh, respectively.

New Bern compiled 45.5 points with sweeps in men's and women's cross country, and a first-place tie in football. D.H. Conley, which won the women's volleyball crown, is second with 43 points. J.H. Rose is third with 26.5 points.

South Central ranks fifth with 21 points.

The Wells Fargo Conference Cup is a companion to the Wells Fargo Cup and recognizes schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performances within different conferences. Wachovia, and now Wells Fargo, has sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.

In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points.

Wayne Christian school is ranked fifth with 115 points. The Eagles advanced to the NCISAA 1-A final four in women's volleyball, and made the school's first-ever appearance in the NCISAA 1-A 8-man state football playoffs.
