MOUNT OLIVE -- University of Mount Olive's Daria Simmons has been selected as the Conference Carolinas women's basketball player-of-the-week.
Simmons posted a career-high 40 points -- the third-highest, single-game output in program history -- during an 83-68 victory over Lees-McRae. The senior added eight rebounds, four steals and an assist in 37 minutes of play. She followed that with a statline -- 17 points, six rebounds, three steals -- in the Trojan women's 79-62 romp over Emmanuel (Ga.) College.
The honor is the first in Simmons' career.
On Jan. 7, Simmons made a spectacular "crossover dribble" move that left Southern Wesleyan's defense in her wake. The ankle-breaking drive to the basket and dish to teammate Kiara Jones led to an uncontested layup.
The highlight-reel play was selected No. 8 overall in espnW's top 10 plays for the week of Jan. 9.
