SWIMMING: EW's Gross notches win, Jones continues to rack up AQs

Eastern Wayne's Josh Gross emerged as a first-time winner this season and fellow Warrior Jazmin Jones continued to rack up automatic qualifying berths for the eastern 3-A regional during the latest swim meet contested at the Goldsboro Family Y.

Gross touched the wall first in 1 minute, 19.81 seconds during the 100 breaststroke.

Jones bested the field with a regional AQ time of 2:14.22 in the 200 free. The freshman swam the anchor leg on the Warriors' 400 free relay, which took first in 4:47.59. Joining her were Madison Tallarida, Emma Diemecke and Paige Childers.

Second-place finishers for EW were Zack Childers (200 free), Ken Weeks (200 individual medley/500 free), Tallarida (50 free) and Jones (100 backstroke). Jones logged an AQ time of 1:05.64 despite taking second behind Goldsboro's Anna Breck.

The Warriors received third-place times from the 200 medley relay, Yohan Yan (200 free/500 free), Tallarida (200 free), Amina Becirovic (500 free) and CC Hickman (100 breaststroke).

Other individual winners -- Goldsboro in the 200 medley relay, Goldsboro's Megan Huston (200 IM), Breck (50 free and 100 back), WCDS' Grace O'Daniel (100 fly), Wayne Christian's Anna Rendall (100 free), CBA's Samantha Castorena (500 free), Rosewood's 200 free relay and Rebecca Fitzmaurice (100 breaststroke).

"Both teams exhibited excellent sportsmanship and swam with all they had in them," Eastern Wayne head coach Nate Schuler said. "Both myself and Coach (Vince) Beasley are very proud of this group of student-athetes. Many of the swimmers posted personal-best times."

On the boys' side, Rosewood teammates Jack Lyon and Dalton Ira combined to win four individual events. Lyon emerged victorious in the 200 IM and 100 free, while Ira earned the top spot in the 200 free and 500 free. Teammates Jonah Clark, Aaron Jarvis, Luke Evans and Justin Brogden formed the 400 free relay that took first in 5:01.08.

The Eagles' Damon Merritt seized first in the 50 free.

C.B. Aycock registered first-place times in the 200 medley and 200 free relay. The same quartet -- Zech Chastain, Brandon Russell, Mitchell Castorena and Ellis Smith -- swam both events.

WCDS junior Zan Pittman won the 100 fly and 100 back.

The teams return to the B.G. Darden Natatorium pool on Friday.
