CHOCOWINITY -- Landon Smothers tossed three touchdown passes during Spring Creek's heart-wrenching, 20-18 loss to Southside on Friday evening.
Smothers heaved scoring throws of 20 and 4 yards to Najee Young, and a 16-yard TD toss to Jamerion Dawson in the third quarter. The sophomore signal caller ended the night 15 of 26 for 160 yards with one pick.
Down 20-18 with 64 seconds left in regulation, the Gators' defense forced a turnover. SC moved the ball downfield, but a penalty pushed them out of field goal range.
The Seahawks hung on to claim their fourth win in the series.
"We had other opportunities to score," SC head coach Aaron Sanders said. "A play here, a play there makes a big difference in the outcome of that ballgame. Right now we've got to get over that little hump."
Jessie Casper led the Gators' ground force with 85 yards on 13 totes.
"It was good to see him running the ball again," Sanders said. "Our running backs ran the ball hard all night and we were able to get a running game going, which is something we've struggled with this season."
JaVon Newsome provided 54 yards on eight carries. Young, Jamal Davis and Smothers combined for 10 yards on five rushing attempts.
Spencer Jameson paced the Gators' defense with five solo stops and five assists. Cole Jacobs contributed three tackles and three assists. Xavion Garcia provided three stops and two assists. Young had three tackles, one assist and a tackle for loss.
Spring Creek (1-4 overall) returns home Friday against Lakewood.
