COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: Trojan women top Fayetteville State in 5 sets

MOUNT OLIVE -- Junior Casey Feichter recorded a career-high 33 digs as University of Mount Olive grinded out a 20-25, 25-17, 27-29, 25-21, 15-11 victory over in-state volleyball foe Fayetteville State University on Tuesday evening.

Mackenzie Call and Britni Johnson each collected a double-double. Call provided 12 kills and 13 digs, while Johnson had 13 kills and 17 digs. Junior Karley Pounds flexed her muscles with a team-leading 15 kills.

Kamber Skeen racked up a season-high 52 assists.

The Trojans (6-5 overall) travel to in-state foes Pfeiffer University on Friday and Belmont Abbey on Saturday.

Women's soccer

MOUNT OLIVE -- Jocelyn Yurchak punched in the "golden goal" in the 110th minute as University of Mount Olive turned back Converse (SC) College, 1-0, in a Conference Carolinas match Tuesday evening.

Yurchak had a goal-scoring opportunity denied in the 105th minute. She attempted five shots on frame, while Jess Hickey ripped four shots toward the net.

Stephanie McCoy and Abigail Ross shared goal-keeping duties for UMO, which improved to 3-2-1 overall and 1-1-1 against CC opposition this season.

The Trojans end a string of five consecutive home games Saturday against conference foe Erskine (SC) College. Kickoff is 1 p.m.

Men's golf

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- John Thatch shared 13th place overall in individual play and University of Mount Olive finished seventh as a team during the three-day, Jay Jennison Cup played on the World Golf Village links.

Thatch shot 72-72-71 for a 215. Nick Adams fired back-to-back 71s on the first two days and finished tied for 16th at 216. Harry Bayley (221) took 31st. Patrick Schweitz (226) and Ricky Gutierrez (231) wound up among the top 70 individuals.

No. 5-ranked West Florida claimed the team title.

The Trojans return to action Oct. 17 at the Phoenix Invitational, which is hosted by Elon University.
