WINSTON-SALEM -- University of Mount Olive opened its 2016 women's volleyball campaign with a 3-1 record during the two-day, second annual Spike Out Hunger Challenge hosted by Winston-Salem State University.

The Trojans endured an 18-25, 25-22, 24-26, 25-22, 10-15 loss to the Rams -- the reigning Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association champions -- to start the Challenge.

Britni Johnson cranked out a team-high 16 kills, followed by Karley Pounds with 11. Natalie Perez and Mackenzie Call supplied six kills apiece.

Setter Kamber Skeen posted a double-double -- 35 assists, team-high 15 digs. Samantha Winfield had 12 digs, while Casey Fiechter contributed 10 digs.

The teams combined for 112 kills.

UMO returned to the court and claimed a 25-27, 25-21, 24-26, 25-23, 15-13 victory over Kutztown (PA) University. Johnson reeled off 21 kills and just missed a double-double with nine digs. Perez knocked down 11 kills.

Skeen distributed 43 assists among eight hitters. Fiechter emerged as the defensive leader with 19 digs.

The Trojans defeated Slippery Rock (PA) University on Saturday and handed in-state foe Chowan University a four-set defeat.

UMO continues a season-opening, eight-match road swing next weekend at USC Aiken. The Trojans face the host Pacers, Merrimack, Lenoir-Rhyne and Lander (SC) University.

Women's soccer

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. -- University of Mount Olive opened 2016 women's soccer campaign with a 2-0, non-conference loss to Peach Belt member Georgia College on Saturday afternoon.

The Bobcats tallied a single goal in each half and turned away two Trojan corner-kick attempts in the first 45 minutes. The Bobcats keeper saved UMO's lone shot in the 77th minute.

Stephanie McCoy had four saves for the Trojans.

Mount Olive (0-1-0 overall) travels to Francis Marion (SC) University today. Kickoff is 1 p.m.

Men's soccer

FLORENCE, S.C. -- Oliver Drakenhammer notched the game-winning goal in the 67th minute as Francis Marion University turned back University of Mount Olive, 2-1, on Saturday evening.

Drakenhammer put FMU ahead 1-0 in the 13th.

UMO tied the game at 1-1 on Dakotah Casale's unassisted goal in the 57th.

Trojans keeper Nick Bernsdorf logged two saves.

Mount Olive (0-1-0 overall) entertains Catawba on Wednesday.
