Midway struck as quickly -- if not faster -- than the lightning strikes that lit up the night-time sky around Branch Pope Field on Thursday evening.

The Raiders built an 18-0 lead within a 61/2-minute stretch early in the opening quarter. Officials suspended play and sent both teams to the locker room with 3:58 remaing in the opening quarter.

The Eagles faced a fourth-and-inches play at the Raiders' 44-yard line.

The game is tentatively scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday.

* Officials suspended play at Spring Creek, which trailed East Carteret 35-14. The game was halted with 9 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.  The Mariners were awarded the win since National Federation High School guidelines state a game is official once the first half has been completed.

EC holds an 8-0 series edge over the Gators.

* North Duplin dropped a 44-36, double-overtime decision to South Lenoir. The Blue Devils won for the third time in four meetings against the Rebels, who are now 16-18 against regular-season non-conference opposition since 2010.

* Earl Gibson Jr. accounted for three touchdowns, including an 80-yard kickoff return in the opening quarter of a 38-27 road loss against Franklinton. Trace James scored the other touchdown for the Bulldogs, who dropped to 1-2 overall this season.

* Charles B. Aycock trailed North Lenoir 36-27 at halftime. The teams are scheduled to resume play at 6 p.m. Monday at Bullock Field.

* Parrott Academy owned a 22-20 advantage over Wayne Christian at halftime. School officials did not reach an agreement to either suspend or complete the game.

* Goldsboro and Southern Wayne will meet for the 39th time next Tuesday in Dudley. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

Eastern Wayne had a bye week.

Wayne County Public Schools dismissed students three hours early today due to the threat of high winds and heavy rain from Hurricane Hermine as it makes its way up the eastern seaboard.
