Eastern Wayne opened its 2016 season with a 5-4, non-conference loss to perennial Big Est 3-A power Rocky Mount on Thursday afternoon.
The Warriors notched two singles points from top-seeded Elizabeth Sutton and third-seeded Bella Bowen. Sutton-Emily Uzzell and Bowen-Morgan Agner each picked up a singles point in doubles play.
"Today was a tough match to lose, but there were many positives to take out," EW head coach Craig Hassell said. "We just need more practice to refine our strokes and shot selection as well as consistency."
The Warriors (0-1 overall) return five starters, including four seniors, in the top six.
Eastern Wayne launches the Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference portion of its season next Tuesday at South Central.
