Cory Worrell walked behind the Charles B. Aycock bench, adjusted his hat and commented that Goldsboro was controlling possession of the game.

The Cougars displayed a steady work rate and frustrated the Golden Falcons' defenders by consistently pushing the ball up the sidelines to create goal-scoring opportunities. The ploy neutralized Aycock's strength -- its midfield.

But Goldsboro couldn't finish its plays.

And Aycock did at the right time.

Zach Zacharzuk converted a 40-yard free kick in the 52nd minute to put a 3-1, non-conference victory on ice at Cougar Stadium on a sweltering Thursday afternoon. It was the senior captain's first goal of the season.

"Thank God for the free kick," first-year CBA head coach Cory Worrell said. "Give Goldsboro credit. They put up a fight every second of the game. We just had to continue to keep playing our game and put the balls in the back of the net."

The Golden Falcons (2-0-0 overall) struck in the first five minutes.

Leo Carcamo took the ball away from a Cougar defender, dribbled into the 18-yard box and zipped a short pass to Andres Linares. Linares drew a hard foul that resulted in a penalty kick.

David McIver easily converted the PK for a 1-0 lead.

Five minutes later, a defensive turnover just outside the Golden Falcons' box allowed Goldsboro (0-2-1) to climb back into the contest. Speedy Ruben Quiroz seized control of the ball in open space and beat his defender one-on-one toward the net.

CBA keeper Skylar Landers came charging off his line and Quiroz tucked the ball away into the lower left corner of the net.

The teams entered halftime deadlocked at 1-all.

"I thought we played hard," GHS head coach Chad Lewis said of the opening half. "The second half we talked about how we wanted to get the ball on the ground more, keep the possession more."

The thick grass slowed the pace of the ball and the Cougars easily intercepted passes to disrupt the Golden Falcons' offensive flow.

But not before CBA got its second goal.

Coe Jordan bulled his way between two Goldsboro defenders, got a touch on the ball and knocked it toward Sean Doulin. The junior striker dribbled into the box and ripped a shot past Patrick, who dove in hopes of deflecting the ball with his cleat.

Aycock 2, Goldsboro 1.

"We had plenty of time to come back after first one (of the second half)," Lewis said.

Barely 10 minutes after Doulin's game-winning score, the Cougars were whistled for a handball. Zacharzuk set up on the 40-yard line and boomed a kick toward the goal that slipped just underneath the crossbar for the 3-1 advantage.

"That big free kick kind of hurt us," Lewis said.

Goldsboro attempted to answer when Quiroz earned a breakaway opportunity against CBA backup keeper Hampton Tilghman. Tilghman guessed Quiroz would shoot toward the near post and the ball just missed wide right.

"The first five minutes of the second half, I thought we picked it up," Worrell said. "But then I felt like we sat back. We settled for what the score was and let Goldsboro control the game from there on out.

"Without that free kick, it could have been a different game."

CBA improved to 55-11-6 against county opposition since 2006, including a 10-0-2 stretch that started last season.
