PIKEVILLE -- Equal parts possession and speed.

Charles B. Aycock's varsity soccer team embodied that notion Wednesday evening, surviving a sluggish start to file a season-opening, 4-nil victory over visiting Rosewood High at Hardy-Talton Stadium.

The match, rescheduled after Wayne County Schools canceled all outdoor-related athletic contests a day earlier, was played before a spirited crowd in near-perfect, fall-like conditions.

Aycock's winning margin, however, took a while to develop.

Rosewood (0-1-0) opened with a spotless 20 minutes of futbol, executing a medley of communication and letter-perfect shape that gave every appearance of mid-season form.

The purple-and-gold routinely denied CBA access to legitimate scoring opportunities, beating the Falcons to 50-50 balls, efforts played over the top and access to the penalty area.

Call it a turf war at midfield.

" I thought we looked all right the first 20 minutes," Rosewood head coach Eddie Maldonado said, " but as the game went on, we started to fall apart at midfield."

"They're a talented team... took advantage of our mistakes."

The first of which took place in the 34th minute.

Aycock (1-0-0) striker Leo Carcamo corralled an errant toss from goal by Rosewood keeper Tucker Chapin, gaining control of the ball and launching a strike that sailed just inside the left post for a 1-0 powder blue advantage.

The punch was followed a minute later when Dillon Borel won a tussle at midfield, played a touch to Oscar Carcamo and watched as the speedy sophomore rifled a blast by Chapin for a 2-0 Aycock lead.

In a word, dizzying.

But for first-year Aycock head coach Cory Worrell, a welcome sight.

"Little nervous, first game of the season," the coach noted, "first half was a little shaky. We wanted to play our game and work through the middle."

And in the second period, they did just that.

The Falcons possessed and powered through the half's opening twenty minutes, scoring twice more on goals by the Carcamo brothers, who simply proved too much for a gassed Rosewood midfield.

"They're great," Worrell said of the duo, "Leo up front... Oscar playing the holding mid, he knows how to distribute the ball and even take some shots."

CBA's Sean Doulin joined Borel in the assist column, tallying two on the evening. In total, the Falcons launched an impressive 14 shots on goal.

Aycock travels to face Goldsboro High today, while Rosewood will be the guest of Wallace-Rose Hill.
