CARY -- Wayne County is well represented on the baseball scene when the 2016 edition of the Powerade State Games, sponsored by N.C. Amateur Sports, begins today in the Triangle area.

Southern Wayne's Jackson Massey is part of the Region 2 coaching staff.

Three players -- Rosewood's JP Peacock, Eastern Wayne's Tanner Wells and Southern Wayne's Jack Casbarro -- are on the squad that began Pool B play today against Region 1 at the USA National Baseball Training Complex.

First pitch was 12:45 p.m.

The Region 2 squad continues play Friday against Region 7 with a 6:30 p.m. start and finishes off pool action against Region 8 on Saturday at 10 a.m.

The three-day event concludes Sunday. The top two teams in each pool advance to the medal round.

Donnell Garris of North Lenoir is the Region 2 skipper.

"I appreciate him selecting me to help," Massey said.

Peacock and Wells helped lead their respective teams to the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs this spring. Casbarro and his Saints' teammates didn't share that experience, but vastly improved as the season progressed.

The trio impressed Massey and Garris.

"We chose those three because they showed the right skill set and tools at the workouts. They have great potential and can see how they stack up against some of the top underclassmen in the state," Massey said. "This will be a great experience for them because they get to play at a great baseball facility in front college coaches and scouts, and against great talent.

"I think this will give them the confidence for the rest of the summer and upcoming school year."

All three are members of the Wayne County Post 11 Senior Legion baseball squad.
