CHAPEL HILL -- Rosewood emerged as the Carolina 1-A Conference champion during the Wells Fargo Conference Cup competition for the 2015-16 calendar sports year.

The Eagles compiled 89 points. They won the men's golf title and finished runners-up in three sports -- baseball, women's soccer and men's track and field.

"We are extremely proud of winning the Wells Fargo Conference Cup," said RHS athletics director Robert Britt, whose athletic program has won six of the last seven Cups.

"It shows that our athletic department is well rounded. Our athletes take pride in doing their best in every sport."

Rosewood also finished fourth statewide with 320 points in the year-long Wells Fargo Cup competition, now in its 37th year. The Eagles reached the eastern semifinals in men's soccer and women's basketball, and placed third during the season-ending N.C. High School Athletic Conference track and field men's state championship meet.

Princeton, which claimed the NCHSAA state 1-A softball crown, ended up second overall with 78.5 points. The softball team shared the regular-season championship with North Duplin. The Bulldogs' baseball team and women's track and field team each took second place.

In state competition, the Bulldogs ended up 13th with 235 points in the Wells Fargo Cup rankings. PHS was the state runner-up in women's volleyball during the fall.

Lakewood edged Sampson County rival Hobbton 71.5-71 for third place in the conference cup standings. Hobbton won both the men's and women's season-ending track and field championships.

James Kenan placed fourth with 56 points. Spring Creek, which repeated as the conference champion in baseball and girls' soccer, racked up 51 points. North Duplin (34.5 points) and Neuse Charter (31.5) rounded out the eight-team league.

On the 2-A scene, Goldsboro placed sixth among its Eastern Carolina Conference foes with 467.5 points. The Cougars won the women's regular-season soccer title outright.

North Lenoir won the Cup.

Charles B. Aycock secured fourth place in the split-classification Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference. The Golden Falcons won the softball regular-season title and placed second in baseball, which led to an 83-point performance.

Eastern Wayne had 53 points. Southern Wayne amassed 32.5 points.

D.H. Conley captured the cup.

Sponsored by Wells Fargo and the NCHSAA, the Conference Cup recognizes schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performances within individual conferences. Wachovia, and now Wells Fargo, have sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.

Each conference determines its own method of scoring points.
