MOUNT OLIVE -- No. 8-ranked University of Mount Olive extended its win streak to five with a 16-3 thrashing of in-state Conference Carolinas men's lacrosse rival Lees-McRae on Saturday afternoon.
The Trojans (10-2 overall) outscored the Bobcats 9-1 in the second half and remained perfect in four league outings this season.
L-MC scored the first goal less than three minutes into the opening quarter. UMO scored seven of the next eight goals -- two by Jacob Ball, three by Brett Kingston, one by Matt Shields and one by Eddie Hendrickson.
Jesse Mitchell, Vincent Cardella, Luke Koferi (two goals), Nico Shewey and Evan Floyd accounted for most of the Trojans' second-half offense.
Kingston finished the game with four goals and two assists. Shields had two goals and two assists. Shewey, Spencer Gelinas, Thatcher Clark, Dylan Lowenstein, Austin Whitlow and Luke Morris supplied one assist apiece.
Softball
MOUNT OLIVE -- University of Mount Olive extended its win streak to 10 with a doubleheader sweep of Conference Carolinas foe North Greenville at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field on Saturday afternoon.
Kayla Allen delivered a one-out, walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to propel the Trojans to a 4-3 win in the opener.
Kelsey Akers' double and Anna Ingram's bases-clearing home run down the left-field line sparked Mount Olive to an 11-5 win in the nightcap.
In game one, designated hitter Charlene Thompson drew a lead-off walk to start the Trojans' seventh. Akers singled to left and, along with Thompson, moved up a base on Savannah Becker's sacrifice bunt.
Allen followed a game-clinching double to center field.
Akers, Allen and Jazmin Montgomery each had two hits.
Julie Hodges claimed the mound win relief of starter Madison Johnston. Hodges logged the final two outs in the top of the seventh after North Greenville had tied the game at 3-3.
In game two, the Trojans and Crusaders were knotted at 4-all through 3 1/2 innings. Allen's double to left-center field, followed by Ingram's homer put UMO ahead 7-4.
Becker's two-RBI single up the middle highlighted a four-run, fifth-inning uprising that all but sealed the outcome.
Akers (two RBI) and Allen (two RBI) pounded out three hits apiece. Ingram finished 2-for-3 with three RBI. Designated hitter Brooke Kamphuis contributed two hits and scored twice.
Hodges picked up the complete-game win inside the circle. She allowed five earned runs on 10 hits and retired three Crusaders on strikeouts.
Baseball
MOUNT OLIVE -- University of Mount Olive seized its first three-game sweep in Conference Carolinas play this season after taking a doubleheader from King (Tenn.) University on Saturday afternoon.
The Trojans won 6-3 and 12-6.
Additional details were not available.
UMO erupted for five runs during the first two innings and cruised past King, 9-2, in game one Friday evening.
Prior to the series opener, members of the Guardian Brotherhood along with the Southern Wayne ROTC were honored as part of the Wounded Warriors and Military Appreciation night at Scarborough Field.
Zak Orrison and Brett Lang trotted home on Stephen Wallace's two-RBI double in the first inning. Orrison connected on an RBI, David Mayo had an RBI groundout and Lang pushed across a run with a sacrifice fly -- all in the second inning.
UMO tacked on additional runs in the third, sixth and seventh innings.
Orrison and Ricky Surum (RBI) paced the Trojans' with two hits apiece. The duo combined for two stolen bases. Lang also swiped a base.
Brighton Hudson (4-2) threw a complete game. He gave up two runs (one earned) on 10 hits and logged one strikeout.
Men's volleyball
BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Robert Poole pounded out a team- and match-high 16 kills as University of Mount Olive concluded regular-season play with a 25-27, 23-25, 21-25 loss to Conference Carolinas foe King (Tenn.) on Saturday morning.
The Trojans (12-11 overall, 11-7 CC) have secured a top-four spot and opening-round home game in the conference tournament, which begins next week. The time and opponent has not been announced.
Kian Hollevoet delivered 10 kills. Ivan Trifunovic and Peyton Schirman each contributed seven kills. Mike Mann and Andrew Sydow posted six and three kills, respectively.
Andrew Salmon led the defense with 18 digs.
Jeff Yasalonis dished out 41 assists among seven hitters.
Sydow provided a team-high nine kills and posted seven block assists during a 25-18, 25-17, 30-28 triumph over Lees-McRae on Friday evening. Trifunovic collected eight kills, nine digs and three block assists.
Robert Poole contributed eight kills and six digs.
Yasalonis handed out 34 assists.
Women's lacrosse
GAFFNEY, S.C. -- Riann Daziel punched in a hat trick (three goals) during University of Mount Olive's 8-4 loss to No. 11-ranked Limestone, 8-4, in Conference Carolinas action Saturday afternoon.
The Saints (10-2 overall, 5-0 CC) seized sole possession of first place in the league. Candace Corkin scored the other goal for the No. 17-ranked Trojans, who dropped to 9-4 overall and 4-1 in league play.
Carleigh Davis tallied three goals for Limestone, which led 4-0 at halftime.
UMO travels to conference foe Emmanuel (Ga.) today.
Tennis
MOUNT OLIVE -- University of Mount Olive swept the doubles courts and cruised past Southern Wesleyan, 8-1, in Conference Carolinas play at the Walker Tennis Center on Saturday.
The tandems of Ogulcan Deniz-Sherzod Akramov, Jose Luis Cortijos-Martim Sousa and Martin Moser-Yannic Stark each won their respective match.
Deniz, Cortijos, Sousa, Stark and Akramov each prevailed in singles.
On the women's side, UMO triumphed 6-3.
Stella Di Michele-Alejandra Hernandez, Paulina Delgado-Jennifer Byrd and Mulan Bartz-Nicole La Chappelle each seized a point on the doubles courts. Di Michele, Delgado and La Chappelle each claimed a singles point.
Southern Wesleyan forfeited No. 3 and No. 6 singles.
The Trojan men handed Belmont Abbey an 8-1 loss on Friday afternoon.
Cortijos, Moser, Sousa, Stark and Akramov each claimed a singles point. Akramov-Ogulcan Deniz, Cortijos-Sousa and Moser-Stark swept the doubles courts.
UMO escaped 5-4 in the women's match.
DiMichele, Hernandez, Delgado and Mulan Bartz each picked up a singles point. DiMichele-Hernandez sealed the outcome with an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles.
