Shake it off, Warriors.
The season's still early.
Eastern Wayne's baseball team suffered a devastating 7-0 loss to Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference rival South Central at home on Tuesday evening.
Warriors head coach Jabo Fulghum knows why.
"Their (Falcons) pitcher did a tremendous job," he said. "He (Quentin Patterson) threw a complete game. We didn't make adjustments, he made good pitches."
Patterson, the winning pitcher, took the mound in the bottom of the first inning and never missed a beat throughout the entire game. He gave up one hit, but allowed no runs. He did allow three walks, but threw 13 strikeouts.
The Warriors entered the second inning with a chance to do the same, but Falcons senior Adam Harris knocked it out the park on the first pitch in the inning.
Each player in Eastern Wayne's lineup stood at the plate with the intent of adding to the scoreboard during each inning. But according to Fulghum, the Warriors lacked intensity.
"I've got to give South Central credit," he said. "They played a lot better than we did. They got better pitching, and they outplayed us. We got to bounce back from here. We didn't play with any intensity.
"We didn't play with that desire to win today, and we got to play with that. I don't care who you play, you got to play with that desire to win.
Carlyle Smith had the Warriors' lone hit. Tanner Wells started on the mound and Collin Nix pitched in relief.
The Warriors (4-2 overall, 0-1 ECC) travels to New Bern on Friday.
