Case Kermode drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Wayne Country Day upended perennial independent school powerhouse Lawrence Academy, 3-2, on Thursday afternoon.

Tied at 2-2 after 61/2 innings, the Chargers opened their half of the seventh on Zach Barfield's lead-off walk. Barfield moved into scoring position on Drew Barnes bunt single. Kermode connected on a two-strike pitch up the middle that Lawrence's second baseman fielded and threw out Barnes at second base.

Kermode beat the throw to first and Barfield raced home to seal the outcome. WCDS beat Lawrence for the first time since 2007.

Barnes, Amane Godo (two RBI), Patrick Hall and Kermode provided two hits apiece. John Strickland contributed one hit. Godo's two-RBI single tied the game at 2-all in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Strickland threw four innings of five-strikeout, no-hit relief behind starter Hall. The senior walked four, hit two batters and yielded two runs (one earned) on three hits.

WCDS aided Hall with a 4-6-3 double play in the first inning.

"I am so proud of how the boys battled tonight," Chargers head coach Michael Taylor said. "They knew the plan and stuck with it. We saw some things tonight that we need to work on in practice on Friday. We will get back to work."

The Chargers (4-1-1 overall) face Norfolk Christian at The Oakwood School outside Greenville on Saturday. First pitch is noon.
