NEW BERN -- Kelsey Hayes snagged the game-ending out and Southern Wayne opened Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference play with a 6-5 victory over New Bern on Thursday afternoon.
Trailing 2-1 after six innings, the Saints reeled off five hits -- including a three-RBI triple by Rebecca Coor -- to grab a 6-2 lead. The Bears answered with three runs before Hayes denied any further comeback when she caught a deep fly ball to center field.
Mackenzie Bryan paced the SW offense with three hits. Rachel Grady and Amber Pfennig contributed two hits apiece. Coor provided one hit and drew two walks.
Dawn Anderson emerged as the winning pitcher. She surrendered five runs (two earned) on five hits, walked three and struck out three.
It was the Saints' first-ever win over the Bears.
