FAYETTEVILLE -- Umpires called the game for darkness in the top half of the sixth inning, and Wayne Country Day returned home with a 4-3, five-inning win Thursday afternoon.
The Chargers' John Strickland logged four strikeout and two hits, and held Northwood scoreless through four innings. Jacob Magera threw the fifth and allowed three earned runs to go along with a strikeout.
Zach Barfield paced the WCDS offense with two hits and two RBI. Strickland (RBI), Patrick Hall (RBI), Mitch Turnage and Case Kermode provided one hit apiece. Kermode scored two runs.
"We have a lot to learn early in the season," WCDS head coach Michael Taylor said. "The Northwood pitcher threw the ball really well early in the game, and we did a good job adjusting at the plate. Strickland threw the ball well and was on a pitch count."
The Chargers (1-0-1 overall) entertain Community Christian next Tuesday. First pitch is 4 p.m.
