UMO: Men's lacrosse, women's basketball prevail

MOUNT OLIVE -- No. 11-ranked University of Mount Olive exploded for six fourth-quarter goals and handed Roberts Wesleyan an 11-4, non-conference loss in men's lacrosse on Wednesday afternoon.
Matt Shields tallied three of his team-high five goals in the final period.
Thatcher Clark, Stephen Bowlan and Jesse Mitchell helped stake the Trojan stickmen to a 3-0 lead after one quarter. Shields found the back of the net 18 seconds into the second quarter and Austin Whitlow boosted UMO's advantage to 5-0.
Roberts Wesleyan (2-1 overall) closed the gap to 5-2 at halftime and trailed 7-4 after three periods. The Trojans converted three man-advantage goals in the fourth quarter and remained unbeaten in three outings this season.
UMO keeper Ross Bowman notched eight saves between the pipes.
The Trojans return home Saturday to face Catawba College.
Women's basketball
CONVERSE, S.C. -- Jada Bacchus and Felicity Havens each posted a double-double as University of Mount Olive cruised past Converse (S.C.) in a Conference Carolinas game Wednesday evening.
Bacchus logged 13 points and 10 rebounds. Havens contributed 12 points and 12 rebounds -- her second consecutive double-double and third overall this season. Daria Simmons chipped in 12 points.
Kiara Jones scored nine points and snagged 10 rebounds. She was one point within recording her fourth double-double of the seson. Rachel Fehl picked the Valkyries for a career-high five steals.
UMO owned a 43-28 edge on the boards and overcame a season-high 31 turnovers.
The Trojan women (15-10 overall, 13-6 CC) entertain in-state foe Pfeiffer U on Saturday. Tip-off is 5 p.m. inside Kornegay Arena.
