Quartet leads UMO men's lacrosse team past Catawba

MOUNT OLIVE -- No. 11-ranked University of Mount Olive scored five of the game's first six goals and rolled past in-state region foe Catawba, 11-5, at Amon Field on Saturday afternoon.

Jesse Mitchell, Matt Shields, Thatcher Clark and Jacob Ball notched two goals apiece for the Trojan stickmen, who remained unbeaten in four outings this season. Mitchell also dished out two assists.

Luke Dalman, Brett Kingston and Nico Shewey each provided one goal. UMO attempted 58 shots against Catawba goalie Ryan Applegate, who logged 19 saves.

Ross Bowman recorded 10 saves for the Trojans.

Women's basketball

MOUNT OLIVE -- Ni'Ya Styles dropped in a game-high 24 points and the University of Mount Olive extended its win streak to a season-high six games with a 70-49 conquest of Conference Carolinas foe Pfeiffer University on Saturday afternoon.

Styles shot 6 of 10 from behind the 3-point arc.

Daria Simmons contributed 16 points. Felicity Havens just missed a double-double with seven points and 11 rebounds, including 10 on the defensive end. Anamaria Zjacic provided eight points and eight rebounds off the bench.

UMO shot 58.8 percent (10 of 17) from 3-point range and owned a 42-35 edge on the boards.

Men's volleyball

MOUNT OLIVE -- University of Mount Olive extended its win streak to four with weekend victories over Lees-McRae and King (Tenn.) University on the Conference Carolinas scene.

Peyton Schirman pounded out a team-high 16 kills during the Trojans' 25-23, 26-24, 23-25, 25-23 conquest of the Tornado inside Kornegay Arena on Saturday afternoon. Andrew Sydow, Robert Poole and Kian Hollovoet collected 11 kills apiece. Sydow logged six block assists.

Setter Jeff Yasalonis passed out 52 assists among seven hitters and recorded two kills in two attempts with no errors. He just missed a double-double with nine digs.

Ryan Thomas emerged as the defensive leader with 19 digs.

Hollovoet delivered a 12-kill performance as the Trojans scratched out a 25-21, 25-16, 27-29, 25-20 triumph over Lees-McRae. Schirman provided 11 kills, followed by Poole with eight. Mike Mann cranked out six kills.

Sydow posted four block assists.

Yasalonis handed out 39 assists. Thomas collected 12 digs.

Women's lacrosse

MOUNT OLIVE -- Riann Daziel notched a hat trick within an 18-minute span as unbeaten University of Mount Olive defeated Conference Carolinas foe Pfeiffer, 15-4, at Amon Field on Saturday afternoon.

Daziel notched an unassisted goal just 38 seconds into the game. She scored 7 1/2 minutes in on a free position shot, and posted another unassisted goal with 10-plus minutes left before halftime.

Daziel and Claire Wigler each tallied five goals. Wigler also dished out three of the Trojans' six assists.

UMO keeper Hannah Knight recorded eight saves between the pipes.
