SWIMMING: County teams continue to work toward regional times

Just .94 seconds.

That's the amount of time separating Charles B. Aycock from the regional qualifying standard in the boys' 200-yard medley relay.

The foursome of Zech Chastain, Colton Marley, Ellis Smith and Zach Broome inched closer with a 2-minute, 00.93 second effort during Tuesday's swim meet at the Family Y. They ended up seventh in the 200 free relay.

"The boys' relays are hovering around automatic qualifying times and are frustated, but it really keeps that carrot out in front of them and our practices become more energized and determined," CBA head coach Linda Chastain said. "We fully expect to be regional qualified at the Jan. 9 meet in Greenville."

Chastain emerged as the 200 freestyle winner in 1:55.19.

Coach Chastain lauded the effort of Lauren Wessel, who continues to shave off time each week in the 100 breaststroke. Wessel placed fifth in 2:08.31.

Southern Wayne senior Austin Edgecomb secured second in the 200 free (2:14.06) and 100 free (57.76). Rosewood's Dalton Ira placed third in the 200 individual medley in 2:30.32. He helped the Eagles' 400 free relay capture second place in 4:14.46. Joining Ira were Owen Blevins, Wes Chandler and anchor leg Kodey Silknitter.

Silknitter secured second place in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.88.

"We have had a few setbacks with illness these last couple of weeks but all of our swimmers continue to drop time," RHS head coach Natalie Ira said.

"The men's relay team is making great strides for a return trip to states this year."

Eastern Wayne's Yinhao Chen seized runner-up honors in the 50 free (25.59) and grabbed third place in the 100 backstroke in 1:09.06. Yohan Yan placed second in the 500 free (7:22.30).

"We swam a tough meet last night," first-year EW head coach Nate Schuler said. "We were haunted by injuries and disqualifications. I know the team will focus over the next three weeks and be in top form for our next meet."

The Golden Falcons' Abby Sauls, a returning state qualifer, touched the wall first in the 200 free in 2:12.04.

Goldsboro's Navya Dixit captured second in the 500 free (7:07.75) and fourth in the 200 IM (3:08.96). Teammate Anna Breck took runner-up honors in the 100 fly (1:20.47) and placed third in the 100 backstorke in 1:24.41. The duo also swam legs on the Cougars' 200 IM relay, which finished fourth overall in 2:23.56. Joining them were sisters Kaylee and Matti Rose Lyon.

The same four took third in the 200 free relay in 2:11.08.

Rosewood's quartet of Elaina Amy, Kaley Hilton, Sierra Dietz and Kaitlyn Kincaid recorded a second-place effort (5:20.8) in the 400 free relay. Aycock's foursome of Brenna Flanagan, Leah Campbell, Samantha Castorena and Anna Williams wound up third in 5:30.49.
