* Girls' basketball: New Bern 70, Southern Wayne 45 -- Makayah Moore paced the Saints' offense with 18 points. Zaria Coleman contributed 16 points. It was the Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference opener for both teams. The Saints (6-3 overall) visit C.B. Aycock on Thursday.
* Boys' basketball: Lakewood 55, Spring Creek 52 -- Allen Hickman tickled the twine for 22 points in the Gators' road loss. Teammates Xavion Garcia and JaVon Newsome tallied 11 and nine points, respectively. It was the Carolina 1-A Conference opener for both teams.
