A sweep in men's and women's cross country, and runner-up finishes in volleyball and men's soccer has propelled Rosewood to the top spot in the Wells Fargo Carolina 1-A Conference Cup competition after the fall sports season.

The Eagles amassed 35 points -- six more than Lakewood, which earned a share of the league's regular-season football championship. Hobbton is third with 24.5 points, followed by Princeton (21.5), James Kenan (18.5), North Duplin (18), Spring Creek (14) and Neuse Charter (2.5).

Rosewood's soccer team posted a program-best 18 wins and reached the N.C. High School Athletic Association eastern semifinals for the first time in school history. The Eagles won an astounding 11 road games and knocked off two higher-seeded teams before enduring a season-ending loss to two-time defending state champion Wallace-Rose Hill.

"It's our main goal as an athletic department to work our kids as hard as we can so they can be the best they can be in their sport," said RHS athletics director Robert Britt. "Being ahead in the Wells Fargo Cup points validates our effort."

Kenan secured a portion of the Carolina regular-season football championship for the third consecutive year. Princeton reclaimed its status as the league's top volleyball program and reached the N.C. High School Athletic Association state finals for the second straight year.

Just six points separate the top four teams in the split-classification Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference.

Fourth-place Charles B. Aycock compiled 31 points after securing regular-season championships in women's tennis and men's cross country, and finishing second in men's soccer.

Eastern Wayne and Southern Wayne share sixth place with 12 points apiece.

Goldsboro is fifth overall with 145 points in the Eastern Carolina 2-A Conference. The Cougars took second in men's soccer after North Lenoir, Greene Central and South Lenoir finished in a three-way tie for first place.

The Wells Fargo Conference Cup recognizes schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performances within individual conferences. In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play.

Each conference determines its own scoring.

Wachovia, and now Wells Fargo, have sponsored the Cup since 1980.
