RALEIGH -- Louis Tortual claimed the deciding match at 138 pounds and Rosewood slipped past perennial independent schools powerhouse Ravenscroft, 38-36, on Tuesday evening.
Tortual pinned the Ravens' Ethan Aschman in 40 seconds.
Ravenscroft, which finished third as a team in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association state tournament last season, won the final individual bout in overtime.
"This was a very tight match," RHS head coach Bill Edmundson said. "Our younger guys knew we were counting on them to step it up a few notches tonight if we were to pull off the upset. This early in the season you start to see the team come together and realizing what is required to wrestle at the level to which we have become accustomed."
Dylan Melgar (182 pounds), Hunter Weeks (195), defending state 1-A heavyweight champ Kaleb Taylor, Timothy Decatur-Luker (106), Chris Hill (113) and Jordan Todd (126) each picked up an individual win.
Rosewood returns to action today in the muti-team I-95 Duals at Northern Nash.
