Coaches say respective wrestling teams have 'plenty of work to do'

PRINCETON -- More wrestling room work is needed.

That seemed to be the head coaches' main concern after a three-team, non-conference meet contested at Princeton on Tuesday evening.

Then again, it's just 10 days into the regular season.

"We're returning to the wrestling room tomorrow (today)," second-year CBA head coach RJ Allen said after a 46-24 win over Princeton.

"We've got to get back to basics, get the basic moves down so when we get out on the mat we can perform them well. We really have to hammer those home."

The Golden Falcons (6-4 overall) logged 11 individual wins on the night. Jaret Paynter, heavyweight Randy Floars and returning state qualifier Joshua Wallace each emerged victorious during a 66-14 loss to unbeaten North Lenoir.

Paynter pinned the Hawks' Donnie Stevens in 53 seconds. Floars outlasted Cooper Cramer 11-7 and Wallace scored a 19-2 tech fall over Channing Rouse. Wallace and Paynter each finished the night 2-0.

North Lenoir recorded nine pins.

"We wrestled strong ... got a lot to learn, still need to work on our fundamental game," said third-year Hawks head coach Patrick Cline, who returns nine starters from a year ago.

"Our guys have a lot of heart. If we can match our skill level with our heart, there's no ceiling. One of our mottos is to keep going, always move (on the mat). Pressure and tempo makes them (opponents) make mistakes."

Aycock collected eight wins against Princeton, including four forfeits. Clayton Schlomer (220 pounds) defeated Skylar Shields, 5-3. Heavyweight Torrance Franklin, Hayden Gurley and Paynter each pinned their respective opponents. Paynter recorded the night's fastest pin -- a 15-second stick of Christian Peedin.

Austin Doyle, Tyler Marquard, James Reser and Wallace each picked up a forfeit.

The Bulldogs received points -- all falls -- from Luke Brush (120), Benjamin Bayles (126), Michael Daughtry (145) and 152-pounder Kyle Balageo. Balageo pinned the Golden Falcons' Cody Grenier midway through the second period. His victory came on the heels of a first-period fall over the Hawks' Jarrett Cannon.

"Balageo, very happy for him," Princeton assistant coach Tyler Baker said. "He's working harder than he did last year, learning more moves, getting a whole lot better. (As a team) we've got to be better fundamentally (with) more technique and (in) better shape."

Daughtry, a 145-pounder, posted a 2-0 record that included a 26-second fall over North Lenoir's Nick Brown. Princeton (1-4) dropped a 72-12 decision to the Hawks.
