MOUNT OLIVE -- Edgar Bub-Paul Wiederspahn claimed a critical tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles and Matt Finnerty earned the decisive singles point, lifting University of Mount Olive past archrival Barton, 7-2, in the Conference Carolinas regular-season men's tennis finale for both teams Tuesday afternoon.
The Trojans, ranked No. 8 in the Division II Southeast Region, secured their second consecutive league championship.
Bub-Wiederspahn held an early 5-2 advantage against Barton's Jake McCartney-Rafael Ruiz Velasco. The Bulldog duo reeled off four straight games before Bub-Wiederspahn broke serve to tie the match.
Each held serve to force the tiebreaker, which quickly turned in a runaway when Bub-Wiederspahn won five of the first six points and take the match, 9-8.
Finnerty, the No. 1 seed, dumped McCartney 7-6, 6-3 to secure the overall outcome. Mount Olive (15-3 overall, 10-0 CC) completed its second straight unbeaten campaign against conference opposition.
Women's tennis
MOUNT OLIVE -- Seniors Roxanne Chouinard and Francesca Ceppi combined for three points during the University of Mount Olive's 9-0 romp over Conference Carolinas archrival Barton on Tuesday afternoon.
Chouinard-Ceppi won 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. Chouinard and Ceppi each won a three-set singles match.
Alejandra Hernandez, Maite Belloso, Paulina Delgado and Jennifer Byrd also contributed to the shutout win.
UMO (13-5 overall) finished 9-2 in league play.
Men's volleyball
MISENHEIMER -- Peyton Schirman and Andrew Sydow pounded out 16 kills apiece as University of Mount Olive endured a season-ending 28-26, 23-25, 22-25, 25-19, 12-15 loss to Erskine in semifinal-round play of the 2015 Conference Carolinas tournament Tuesday evening.
Mike Mann posted a match-high eight blocks and cranked out 10 kills for the Trojans, who concluded the year 15-11 overall. Bret Rutledge delivered 10 kills, while Sydow provided six blocks.
UMO had 15 team blocks.
Tyler Yanez dished out 49 assists and Josh Donahue recorded 12 digs defensively. Yanez, Donahue and Sydow earned second-team all-Conference Carolinas honors. Rutledge was a third-team all-league selection.
Softball
MOUNT OLIVE -- University of Mount Olive concluded regular-season play with a doubleheader loss against in-state region foe UNC Pembroke on the Nancy Chapman Cassell diamond Tuesday afternoon.
The Braves won 9-1 and 3-1.
UMO managed four hits -- one each by Kelsey Akers, Lauren McGrath, Kristin Power and Taylor Carter in the opener. Power swatted a third-inning home run.
Madison Johnston (15-4) endured the pitching loss.
Pembroke rallied for two seventh-inning runs in the nightcap against UMO hurler Lauren Smith, who tossed a complete-game six-hitter. Smith permitted three runs (all earned) and retired three UNCP batters on strikeouts.
Carter, Savannah Becker and Lindsey Russell each had one hit for the Trojans. Becker, Akers and Beth Overman each stole one base.
